You download WP as a independent software and do want you want with it. They don't shut your blog down.

Jaan, Wordpress now offers hosted blogs at wordpress.com, whereas the program to set up on your own server is at wordpress.org.

yup, duh realized that after I typed my response. Thanks BJ.

Of course I agree with all your responses here hosting a blog at the bloging software's servers is not marketing conducive.

Thanks, Jaan!

I guess by now everybody knows how "UP" I am on blogging. And custom blogskins are probably right now 90% of what I'm doing in the design biz.

Blogs really do offer a load of SEO benefits. Not to mention networking benefits. Bloggers were credited by the New York Times with "Outing" both Senators who blocked the Anti-Pork bill by putting "holds" on it. That's pretty awesome, if you think about it. Blogs as tools to disseminate info very quickly cannot be beat. Whether the subject be political shenanigans, company PR, or how your cat is doing after her surgery, surfers who are interested will know about your post almost instantly if you're using the right blog software on your own domain.

Default WordPress for Podcasting too

I use WordPress for podcasting too. There's a great plugin that automates iTunes submission etc.

The point here is that combining your blog with a podcast allows you to submit your podcast RSS feed to podcast directories. This creates some extra traffic and could make a blog more useful.

Also checkout audioblogger.com and gcast.com for audio blogging tools.

Contact me offline for an example and the name of the plugin.

In admin go to options/writing and copy that list into the box down bottom that says "Update Services".

bj,
I've had a google sitemap on my website for a while that I've had to manually run whenever I do updates and I have the sitemap submitted for it with google sitemaps under my base domain (http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml).
Now that you've sold me on wordpress and I've added my WP blog at http://www.mysite.com/blog/ and I'm getting a wp-sitemap generator (found one from www.arnebrachhold.de), will it be able to generate a sitemap for my whole site including my blog everytime there is a blog post? Or will I need to have two seperate sitemaps submitted to google (http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml AND also create a new one: http://www.mysite.com/blog/sitemap.xml)?

I've got a script installed to run my sitemaps. I paid a friend to set it up to run on a cronjob. Since my site has three different dynamic areas and some static stuff it was easiest to let him do it. The wp plugin only does the blog part.

Sorry, I have no clue what he used. I can tell you this, I used to use automapit, which works well IF you don't have comment spam. The minute you install bad behavior to stop comment spam the automapit thing stops working. And almost everyone running wordpress uses bad behavior. I wish automapit would fix that, it was cool when it worked.
