Default How do you explain to prospects what SEO is?

Having looked at several service providers' sites that provide SEO service, their explainations of SEO vary. So what do you say about SEO when you try to convince your prospects.

Cheers!

SEO = the use of ethical means to get a website to rank higher than it would naturally.

SPAM = the use of unethical means to get a website to rank higher than it would naturally.

...very fine line between the two :-)

It is simpler if you refrain from using Acronyms, and anything remotely to do with search engine, ranking, or optimization.

There are five attributes a potential client needs to understand and likely they already do -- if place in different context.

1. Marketing
2. Medium
3. Markets
4. Opportunity
5. Industry
6. Outcome

Any marketing conducted for a business must acknowledge a medium to develop exposure to the business -- in this case the website on the Internet (the search engine is irrelevant since it is merely an archive) the markets is the important part - that happen to use the archive - thus a cost effective opportunity to and engage these markets.

No matter what marketing methods you use to engage the markets to develop the opportunity you must always consider the industry (we think of it as the competition) but it is the industry nonetheless.

The entire processes is the same as traditional market philosophy with the final outcome that is tangible -- good, bad, or indifferent... simply measuring the resulting effects - compare to predictions, or goals, report leassons learned and start all over again.

Whether you understand that or not > the art and/or science of SEO is unimportant, the technology is unimportant (search engines, algorithms, html coding, tools, etc.), ranks and even trasffic is unimportant - since ranks and traffic themselves don't pay bills -- sales do.

The above six points - remain your argument.
