Framed top on site

I have just re-designed my web site with top frames.

The site was previously non framed. Since traffic is down since the change,can it be attributed to partial frames on the site?

Frames are not good for search engines (no matter what anyone will tell you). Redesigns also almost always negatively affect rankings (I bet you didn't use 301 redirects to forward the old pages to the new ones).

Also, framed sites don't look as professional as unframed sites. You might want to revert back to your old design to save your traffic and try a new design.

Frames actually have some advantages from a design point of view. But kill your ranking stone dead.

Incidentally you can achieve exactly the same effect you have on your site with CSS and have all the text available for SE spiders...

The first sentence it seems you have a strong point that search engines don’t like frame sites, even you don’t explain why, but then in the next sentences you also know what a professional look is. It seems to me that we talk to a frame hater who has no real arguments and want to show the world that no-frame sites are better. Next time you discuss web design, use arguments, not emotions.

i'll take you up on that:

frames are not good for search engines for a couple of reasons and a simple google search reveals many of these. first of, a framed site has to load different HTML files for each frame and that already puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to search engine robots that are looking to index pages, not pages made up of additional pages. a quote from danny sullivan supports my statement:

In contrast, most search engine spiders will only see the master page. Just like an old browser, they don't understand the instructions on how to produce the frame layout. These are ignored, and only information within the noframes tags are read (information which a frames-capable browser will ignore).

IF you are going to use frames and want some search engine success, it is important that you use the NOFRAMES attribute. this will help the search bots better index your site (or the content within) provided you have quality descriptors in your NOFRAMES section.

as for personal preferences, doesn't emotion play a part in your choice? i don't like framed sites either, if for nothing else the frame page URL address are usually useless in the sense of being able to provide a link to someone. instead, you have to link the page by itself and it will wind up appearing without it's frame structure, something i don't think the designer necessarily wants...
