Default Google indexing old site

I am working on the SEO for http://www.kc-inks.co.uk. The redesigned site has been live for about 9 months. I was doing a site:www.kc-inks.co.uk search, and found that G is indexing only the index page of the site, and as supplemental results, it's listing all the old .asp pages, which no longer exists.

The site content is all database driven, so there are no hard links to follow, and I was wondering if G (and Yahoo, for that matter) cannot follow the database driven links from the front page.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me, please?

Welcome to WebProWorld, hannelie!

These days, it's not much of a problem for the major SEs to index database-driven sites. A quick look at your site didn't reveal any huge problems. However, here are a few suggestions, some of which will help get your new site indexed and your old pages out.
  • If you haven't done so, get your products into Froogle
  • Set up Google Sitemaps (is sitemaps US-only?)
  • The image links in the header are less than ideal for SEO, but they should still be good enough to get you indexed.
  • Set up a 301 redirect (do a forum search here for help on that) from all your old ASP pages to their new PHP counterparts.
  • Keep working on inbound links. Yahoo shows a good start for you, but keep working on them.
Anyway, that should get you started. There are a lot of people having problems with large chunks of their sites showing up in the supplemental results. If you haven't yet, check out some of the threads here dealing with that issue, you might pick up some more tips.

Good luck!

Thanks for replying so promptly.

Yes, I have submitted the complete catalogue to Froogle. Unfortunately, the old .asp pages were done by a previous agency, so we don't actually have access to them.

Sitemaps will have to be my next stop, I think.

Thanks again.

Google also seems to have discarded many pages it recently indexed and restored what appears to be old data records into the supplementary index.

There are many ongoing debates as to whether Google has issues, is this planned or an attempt to recover from some issues following the recent 'Big Daddy' change they implemented.

I have several sites which were set up 9 months ago, were regularly indexed and the page total was growing then bang .... the clock now seems to have turned back to January as Google shows cached pages from this period although it visits the sites every day.

you might be able to find your old pages & download/copy them from
www.archive.org/web/web.php
which keep records of sites as they were very useful
