Default Multi Site Web Promotion / Help Needed

Hi All
Thank you for taking a look.
I have just started a new job and it seems one of my responsibilities is getting the companies 4 websites somewhere respectable in the rankings. I have a web designer to do most of the work, he is good at making things look pretty but knows nothing about SEO.
I have been reading the forum avidly, learn't a bit but now I need some help.
So Far:
1) We redesigned the home site(elf925.com)
2) Took out all the flash animation from the 4 sites.
3) Optimised the graphics from the 4 sites.
4) Started adding alt tags for the pics
5) Worked on the meta and titles all pages
6) Added more text
7) There were links on every page of every site linking to the home pages of the other sites. We removed this, now they only link to each other from the index page. Is this OK?? I have read cross linking is bad

So today
the body jewelry site went from PR0 to PR2
the silver jewelry site went from PR0 to PR1
I count this as a minor success!!!!!!!!!Long way to go

Now we are:
1) Regsitering to directories
2) Joining linkmaster.net / link2me.com to build links. I hope this is OK providing we link to on topic sites. I have arelis to keep track of links and find new ones.

When I started 3 months ago I didn't know anything, I would appreciate it if you could advise on what I have done so far, is it ok?? and what should I do next.

Greatful for any help

Best Regards

Jasper

I would be seriously careful with reciprocal linking and submissions at directories. Don't overdo that in a short term period. Take your time... :)

I would not dare to go for more than 40 links per month. Does anyone else here have another opinion?

Check for broken links, make sure you are targeting the apropiate keywords, and that you content is well optimized for those keywords.

Link building should be done naturally, with quality, related websites, it is better to get 10 good links from quality websites than 50 or 100 from not related, low quality websites. So is better quality than quantity.

I agree internet-marketing-cr it is not the number per week that is important or a target, but the quality/relevance of the links that are linking to you and the same goes for your outbound links as well.

Hi Thanks for he tips so far.

I have just added google site maps (I didn't even know there was such a thing) We will add regular site maps as well.

Regard the links, I would like to clarify what is classed as a revavent link. We are a jewelry manufacture making everything from cheap plastic stuff for kids to some quite expensive silver jewelry. Whenever I look in directories for jewelry I see watches, silver jewelry, wedding jewelry, jewelry shopping, indian jewelry etc etc. I assume all these are relavent to my customers and so would count as good links.

Also we will be making a new shopping website for retail so would links from other shopping websites be relavent i.e. clothing, fashion, consumer goods etc.

Your advise would be much appreciated

Thanks

Jasper

Does that mean that for every post I get a backlink?
Then I must some thousands of them, as a member in many other forums. Cool stuff! :)

Consider moving away from concentrating linking on directories and more from real websites/blogs that are related to what your selling.
