Default Sub-Domain vs Directory

We are building some additional, specific content areas on our site. Is it better to structure it as new.domain.com or www.domain.com/new? Why?

Thanks!

IMO there is not too much difference but my personal preference is to use a subdomain which is seen by the search engines as a seperate site, while using a folder will show the content as coming from your site.

I would recommend to structure it as a directory!

Our research shows that sub directories very often rank high on search engines - much more often than subdomains!

If your new content warrants enough of seperation from the content of your original site, you should make it a subdomain.

Don't forget, the search engines treat subdomains as a seperate site, so, if you had 5 subdomains all with a link pointing to your main url, that would be 5 "votes" for your site.

Just don't go overboard.
