Barring fantastic luck, I'd say poor performance in search engines.

If you mean what other ways can you promote a site, I'd say directories, newsletters, advertising on other sites, trade shows, magazine ads, newspaper ads, sponsoring a local little league team, bumper stickers, fliers, radio ads, I can go on for hours.

One of the best ways to find less-used methods of advertising is just look around. You might see a cheap billboard where you live. At a local festival you might see banners that sponsors can buy. You might be able to host or mirror an open source software project. Anywhere you see "Drink Coke", or "Blockbuster.com" try to see if you can get there too; online or off. In some cases you might not be able to afford such advertising (like super bowl ads), but try to think of something similar (like late-night commercials on your local TV channel).

There are professionals out there that make a lot of money figuring out how to advertise products. Try to follow their lead and inspiration might strike leading to unusual (but profitable) advertising opportunities.

Unless your website is as popular as Ebay, Amazon... I believe you cannot survive without search engines.
