Default Forgive me if I sound naive...

But I've been told that no page on a site can rank higher than the home (index) page.

Is this true?

If by rank, you mean PR, then No, it's not true. If more links go to an inner page, then that page can have higher PR than the home page. It doesn't happen often.

If by rank, you mean position within a search, then again, the answer is no, an inner page can easily match the search better than the home page. This happens quite often.

What computergenius said.

It really depends on all of the factors surrounding both pages.

The simplest example is this:

http://www.google.ca/search?sourceid...n&q=Matt+Cutts

#1 is Matt Cutts' blog, and #2 is Matt Cutts' homepage itself.
