Default Submission or Searchbots?

Hi,

Does it make sense to submit your web site to the search engines or better setup the proper tags (keywords, title and description), and of course, site copy, and let search bots index it?

I know it's advised to do both but I think it's just a waste of time. No matter if you register in Google and Yahoo or not, your site comes in anyway, sooner or later, and no matter how you submit it, the search engines show and index it as their algorithms are setup.
So should you bother to register if they do it automatically?

One more related question - there are some SE which do not automatically spider your site, you need to register. Should you bother, having in mind they have like 3-4 % share and all the rest is Google, Yahoo and MSN?

This should not take long to do and is not near as important as getting links.
