The question is this: Does anyone read these and actually contact a spammer? They even admit in the email to not knowing what your website is that they're emailing about.

Does anyone think it'd be worth contacting their host or provider about the spam? I've received this one about 4 times in the last 3 days.

Brian.

IMO Short answer: No. Your time is better spent in the pursuit of your business. You can't stem the tide of spam, so just delete and move on.

It's bad enough to waste time viewing those type e-mails, but worse to spend even more time in the endless pursuit of trying to report it.

Default True.

True... obviously their site wouldn't be a big loss anyway... they're getting so few clients from it that they need to resort to SPAM.

Apparently someone does, as they continue to send out those emails.

If you send out 1 million of those emails then there's bound to be at least .01 percent of them that hire them (that would be 100). If the spammer makes $500 on average from each one then the spammer has made $50,000.

The problem is that there are people out there who respond to spam emails. Otherwise, we wouldn't have spam--cut off the money source and spammers won't send spam.

Any suggestions on how to make that happen? That's a lofty goal.

(BTW, are you going to be in NY next month?)

Even I got the Exact copy of the email couple of times in my Inbox. I just deleted and went ahead.

Yes, some times, but not so obvious. I read them to figure out:
- New (redirection, javascipt) tehcniques?
- New pharming, phishing techniques?
- Enclosed virus?

If I have time, I look up the domain, the server and if it is spam store it in a folder that may be of value, if I get enough URL's (spam servers).

Sometimes I read them and even answer. See how they argument.

Ask my son:

1. He uses Opera. Best pop up blocker? Best on security?

2. He regards every unsolicited email as spam.

P.S. Bad to see that most (advanced) spam now comes from the USA and UK. But my observation may be biased, since I visit most English / American sites.

We need to inform the public that they shouldn't buy anything they receive via unsolicited commercial email. Perhaps some big public service announcements would be in order. Tell the public what spam is and how to identify it.

I'm scheduled to speak in New York at SES. Whether I can get the time to go is another story ;)

Hi All,

someone I know recieved an email saying they won £xxx, xxx and they need to reply soon and send their bank details + pay £1000 to get the money. The idiot, was going to do that and was very willing.

Some people LACK common sense..and sadly these scams generate loads of money for these people. By sending 10,000 emails.. there bound to be 1 idiot who is in HOPE to get something back....

it makes me fume though.. can't someone do something about it? its really annoying.

Maybe a chain letter to highlight the scammers..?

thanks,
WX
