Default Search Engine Submissions

I am far from a web expert and am having trouble climbing the search engine mountain. Several years ago when I first setup my website, I found a free service that submitted my website to all kinds of search engines. Although I have never been high on any of the search engines, when I look at my stats it seems that most of the terms that people are searching for when they find me are related to these old submissions.

I have read many people here saying that submissions are a waste of time and I am just wondering if this is just a coincidence.

Thanks for any advice.

Many search engines will index your site without your having to submit it.

Having your site listed on high-PR, search engine-friendly web directories can help boost your search ranking, not to mention the direct traffic you'll get from them.

You have to submit to many of these directories; they don't have robot to automatically crawl your site.

These last few words are important. VERY much so. It is so important that when submitting to Directories that you get your listing in the right spot, in other words the right category. And that is because the Search Engines will in turn explore the Directories so you must make sure that your site is found in the right place. Some Directories do use Robots which is why your BL's can go up and down overnight.

Thanks for the great feedback. I am working on digging my way through wedding related directories and getting listed as much as possible. One problem I have is that I carry such a wide range of products is it sometimes difficult to pick just one catagory. Can I be penalized for submitting to several catagories?
