Default Listing on Google UK

We are a Uk company with a .com site and have pages rankings in the first 4-5 positions on google.com.
Our site is in English but we don't rank at all on Google uk.
I see .com websites ranking well in google.uk so the only thing I can really think about is that we have hosting in the States.

Does anybody know if this can effect listing on regional searches?
or Any other ideas?

Thanks to all.

Hi, is your site hosted in a server within UK?

Hi There,
No, it is hosting in the USA.
So does "pages from the Uk" select only UK servers?
Thanks
Peter

Default US hosted and .com

Peter,

you are at a disadvantage. The combination of a .com suffix and US hosting means its very difficult for you to rank well in Google.co.uk's UK results. You will still appear in Google.co.uk's results for the web. And you won't have quite the same problem with MSN and Yahoo.

Firstly - we don't have Box's URL or his keywords, so a great deal of this discussion is academic. He/She has not put a website in their profile. Supposing the URL was about Eric Clapton or Clint Eastwood or any search term that the SE's would universally recognise. We have to assume that Box had a reason in the first place to host in the USA and maybe now wishes to target the UK market. Yes there would be a potential problem in getting the UK Google to pick up on the site but it's not immpossible. So Box, please tell us what the site is.

Default How to improve the situation

First you should get a .co.uk domain

then you have 2 choices

1. either get a hosting in the uk and forward your .com with a 301 permenant redirect to your co.uk address.

2. or the other way around, forwarding your .co.uk domain to your .com address.

I would go for the 1st choice.

There might be other options available also.
Or this one might need more refinement.
Please add / correct this solution.

Default A simpler solution

A simpler solution would be to create a dozen pages which target the .co.uk customer with content related to the .co.uk and targetting keywords which are specific to the UK.

Experimenting with Google Maps could be helpful.

and putting your complete postal address with the post code might also help.
