Default Multiple Domains pointing to one site - Good or Bad?

Hello,

What is the SE verdict on having multiple domains pointing to the same site? Is this a good way to get improved ranking or a good way to get black listed?

Along the same lines can you get black listed for having multiple domains all with the same site (individually hosted but exactly the same content)

Any ideas or suggestions on the best way to go about this, would be good.

Thanks

Rob

Default Rule of the Thumb

Rule of the Thumb for search engines is that it is considered as spam.

If you have 5, 10 or more domains pointing to one website, then you are spamming and sooner or later, will get penalized or banned.

But there are instances where it is necessary,
for example : if your company name changes and you need to reflect that in your domain name, so naturally there will be 2 domain names pointing to one site, bear in mind one will be a 301 permanent redirect.

My idea is that you should avoid the practice. it can only cause problems and not solutions.
