How to forward entire website to new domain name? using 301

Hi
I have change my domain name. I want to redirect the whole website including all the subpages in it to new location. All all files are .php extension
In .htaccess i typed
"redirect 301 http://www.domainame.com"
domainname= my website name
but it doens't work??? can anybody help me with .htaccess code please or do i have to create redirect for each subpage?
