keyword generator tools? (other than Overture's...)
Hi,
I'm looking for keyword generator tools on the net, to help determine which keywords would be the best to shoot for - in terms of # of keyword searches & competitiveness.
I thought I saw a post on this several weeks ago but just can't find it, so apologies if I'm missing the boat...
Any such useful tools out there?
Josh

Sure...
There are quite a few.
Obviously Google has their own with the AdWords program.
The most widely used that I know of right now is WordTracker. Their "Keyword universe" product works well, but since everyone is using it there are going to be others already hitting those words.
The newer version is the tool from KeywordDiscovery.com that I haven't tried out yet. I don't spend enough time really researching keywords to warrant the expense for me right now, but at some point I'll give their trial a run (when I have a project that I just can't find the words I need) and see if it makes sense to keep trying. If you happen to try it out, let me know if you like it.
I'm sure there are others (MSN will have their soon as well for their PPC stuff), but those are the 2 I hear about the most. I've seen some that are FF plugins or IE toolbars, but I haven't liked the results there in the slightest.
Brian.

Try www.snap.com . It's a newer search engine and they pull from their own database of searches. Just as good as Wordtracker, consdidering the quality of searches they can give you. Wordtracker, IMO, isn't the best only because they can only monitor meta search engines like MetaCrawler and Dogpile...and who searches on those? :)

I personally use WordTracker just about every day. You might also find the Google Keywords Tool also helpful.

I like the free KW tool at DigitalPoint for quickie searches. http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/
It pulls from Wordtracker and Overture and displays results side by side.

TheDowser
Here is a new tool some people like, and some doesn't like. It's a bit complex for novice users, however I can't find the way to make it simplier and don't lose its power at the same time.
Free version doesn't count competition - this feature is avaialable in Professional version only, however free version is much more powerful than 90% of expensive keyword tools you can find today.
I'm developer of TheDowser (please look at my signature).

Hi,
I just spent part of the past two days to write
an article about keywords research.
Of course I provided also links to related tools.
You can read the article here:

I dont think any of the tools are great for quantitative measurements and you really have to do link analysis to determine how competitive a particular marketplace is.
as far as keyword research goes I made like a 20 page post reviewing most of the keyword research tools on the market here
http://www.seobook.com/archives/001013.shtml
although
http://www.wordtracker.com
is my favorite of them all
and for link analysis I recently created a free tool called backlink analyzer and optilink or seo elite are for sale tools with similar feature sets

If awall19 has a pay for system on keywords, then it could be to your advantage to PM him with your details. Aaron knows more about SEO than most. Please post back if you get one. Cheers David

There are several ways to look for keywords. Some search engines have good own features, free services and professional services. Professional services offen even do offer competitive analysis, where one may see how many pages are competing. Furthermore they give suggestions on local preferences in spelling or special terms. I successfully tried wordtracker: www.wordtracker.com
Furthermore I got a list of free and premium services at:

Thank you for all the info. I have been following this thread and will check out all of the information posted when I can next focus on this project (probably tomorrow).

Question - does not Google (and Yahoo) now penalize you if you're doing backlink checks, especially using automated software? I understood that they have started to do this to "make better use of their bandwidth" etc.
PS - I think the reason my Dog Kennel/Training website is sanboxed was coz I was adding the links all at once... that's my current guess. You have to add only a few links per day/week but do so on a consistent basis, perhaps this is more stringent for less competitive-keyword sites, coz Google knows they are supposed to have only a certain level of web presence. That's my current guess anyways...

it is rare IMHO. in the past I did a large number of automated link queries against their terms of service without any penalty. also most backlink checks are normally performed on competing sites.
that being said I created my tool to allow people to access their results via their APIs, which is not against their TOS.

You might want to try this toll I creared: Keyword Tool. It diplays KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) and CPC. Data is collected from overture, but the site caches everythig so it works much quicker. Also the combination with CPC and the number of search results makes this very powerfull!
