Default How Long?

I'm not expecting anything than rough estimates for your answers but for the first time ever, I have written a page - after - I have been learning about SEO - so I'm excited to see if it makes a difference.

Now the page has been indexed by MSN and hopefully the other search engines will follow soon.

If the page does not rank well after it has been indexed, does this mean it's a dud or is there a delay of some sort before it may appear in the listings.

On MSN where the page has been indexed I am on position 45 for the keywords I tried to optimise the page for - and that is not the new page but my home page which contains a link (using the keywords) to the new page - huh!

In general, you should expect nothing for at least a couple of weeks to a month.

What is your measure of success? That is has a higher ranking than it is at now? (How do you know that it isn't just your competitor's pages doing badly?)

A link to your page might be useful here, so that you could receive some constructive comments.
