Default to many key words repeated what happens?

Hi I understand that to many keywords on a webpage is not good for high rankings.
What happens if a word is used to often? Do the search engines just ignore that particular word in their results for that particular page or would they ignore the whole page completely in their results?

Default They do different things...

Yahoo seems to drop the page out of the SERPs entirely. Google discounts the text and looks for other factors to rank it on, usually lower than if the stuffing didn't occur. MSN just says "SWEET!" and ranks it. Ok, so MSN does lower the ranking a bit, but their SPAM protection isn't as advanced (aka "New engine syndrome").

Default The number I've seen...

The number I've seen most often is 7%. It varies quite a bit by industry, though. Some industries, 3% is too much, other industries take 12% just fine. It's all about trial and error, but not too much at a time.

Thanks for all the comments I agree that its all trial and error as I feel that they change the % quite often. Earlier this year I was seeing some sites with very minimal content on them ranking well with say 1 paragraph on the home page. Now im personally seeing larger pages doing well with lots of content.
I realise their are other factors to consider such as links but im still a big believer in the content but its just getting the correct balance
