dmoz, some facts and fictions
The Open Directory Project (ODP) dmoz is based on the "Open Source" philosophy. It has been inspired by, derived from, the Debian Social Contract http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html
It is administrated by Netscape Communications Corporation, that is part of AOL: http://dmoz.org/socialcontract.html
It is a free service made for users that want to browse for information. If you search for information, you shall use a search engine. It is a human edited directory with editors. Editors may have their own sites on the internet. Dmoz is not made for webmasters, but for browsers. It is open in the following meaning of the word. It is open for users, but not for inclusion. A new site should add additional value to the directory. Lack of unique content to add value to a category is by far the most common reason a site is not listed. Be selective when you submit your site. Try to find the right category. The best is to spend enough time researching which category is most appropriate. Most categories will have a description. Take the time to read the description and look at your site from an objective point of view. Use the search feature to check out where similar sites have been placed.
Submit once and wait. Resubmission owerwrites the old one with a new date
http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html
If you submit your site it does not guarantee inclusion, especially if the site is in a category where there already is a lot of sites, if I does not supply original content, is very similar to other sites or have a lot of affiliated services on the site.
http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html#notinclude
There is no relation between searchengines and dmoz. I the SE’s uses dmoz their algorithms decides how. Trying to spam dmoz to get a higher ranking in the SE’s should have only one effect, increase the work for the editors in the same way as oversubmitting a site does.
If you want to know the status of your site, got to the dmoz forum http://resource-zone.com/ and ask. Do not send email, since editors don’t reply to emails.
If you are dissatisfied with an editor report abuse:

kgun - great information.
HOWEVER:
Status Checks have been discontinued and no longer allowed since 18-May-2005.
Discontinuation of site status checks
Beyond finding the most appropriate category to suggest a site, I would add that Understanding the Guidelines is of utmost importance.
In a nut shell, if your site is ready for submission, get a leg up by helping the editor by providing an accurate, clear and concise title and description.

Thank you both for updated information.
Is this still valid?
"DMOZ produces a weekly (give or take a bit) RDF dump of its data base for users. Its free to download and do with what you like with, as long as its within the terms of the licence agreement".

I'd just like to say Thank You Dmoz, I've just been listed after months of waiting. I suppose patience is a virtue.

Yes, like in much serious SEO, patience is important.
When submitting to dmoz, - Be carefule about the description you use, since some SE's can use that description. Think and rethink before submitting. That description may be there for years.
- Be careful about submitting to the right cathegory.
- Submit and forget.

Whatever you do...dont sign up for one of the auto submit sites to get you into DMOZ...if you do.. cbp will make it his life duty to ban your site from ever getting in....not that you really need dmoz...just a matter of time and Google will either buy it or drop it...

I submitted our site last December, but we are still not indexed. It is obvious, as almost every web site owner wants to get in there.
My tip is: Why don't you apply for becoming an editor? They sure need editors for Norwegian sites too. And they will really appreciate that. Believe me.

Re: dmoz, some facts and fictions
Fact 1: Webmasters want a listing service from DMOZ
Fact 2: DMOZ is not a listing service for webmasters
Fact 3: All complaints about DMOZ are casued by the incompatibility between 1 & 2
(BTW - this is a really old thread)

I think that, related to DMOZ, these are just the best, if not the only, advice that you should follow.

Re: dmoz, some facts and fictions
I submitted my site SEO Workers Search Engine Optimization Consulting Company in December 2007 and nothing happen yet. And I know why. If you don't pay, you don't get included. I already reported two cases at DMOZ and they took care of them. I got more offers after that, and I know some others, but I discontinued reporting to DMOZ those issues, since they treat scammers better than high quality sites like mine anyway.
One thing is sure! I will never pay to get my site submitted and indexed in DMOZ. They should pay me and not the other way around. PERIOD!

Re: dmoz, some facts and fictions
There was a time when many people spammed DMOZ. You can find listing where companies where listeed in many countries and categories. That is no longer allowed but the old ones still remain.
