The Open Directory Project (ODP) dmoz is based on the "Open Source" philosophy. It has been inspired by, derived from, the Debian Social Contract http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html
It is administrated by Netscape Communications Corporation, that is part of AOL: http://dmoz.org/socialcontract.html It is a free service made for users that want to browse for information. If you search for information, you shall use a search engine. It is a human edited directory with editors. Editors may have their own sites on the internet. Dmoz is not made for webmasters, but for browsers. It is open in the following meaning of the word. It is open for users, but not for inclusion. A new site should add additional value to the directory. Lack of unique content to add value to a category is by far the most common reason a site is not listed. Be selective when you submit your site. Try to find the right category. The best is to spend enough time researching which category is most appropriate. Most categories will have a description. Take the time to read the description and look at your site from an objective point of view. Use the search feature to check out where similar sites have been placed. Submit once and wait. Resubmission owerwrites the old one with a new date http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html If you submit your site it does not guarantee inclusion, especially if the site is in a category where there already is a lot of sites, if I does not supply original content, is very similar to other sites or have a lot of affiliated services on the site. http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html#notinclude There is no relation between searchengines and dmoz. I the SE’s uses dmoz their algorithms decides how. Trying to spam dmoz to get a higher ranking in the SE’s should have only one effect, increase the work for the editors in the same way as oversubmitting a site does. If you want to know the status of your site, got to the dmoz forum http://resource-zone.com/ and ask. Do not send email, since editors don’t reply to emails. If you are dissatisfied with an editor report abuse: http://report-abuse.dmoz.org/ Kjell Gunnar Bleivik http://www.multifinanceit.com/ http://www.blognorway.com/ |

kgun - great information.
HOWEVER: Status Checks have been discontinued and no longer allowed since 18-May-2005. Discontinuation of site status checks Beyond finding the most appropriate category to suggest a site, I would add that Understanding the Guidelines is of utmost importance. In a nut shell, if your site is ready for submission, get a leg up by helping the editor by providing an accurate, clear and concise title and description.

Is this still valid?
"DMOZ produces a weekly (give or take a bit) RDF dump of its data base for users. Its free to download and do with what you like with, as long as its within the terms of the licence agreement". Kjell Gunnar Bleivik http://www.multifinanceit.com/ http://www.blognorway.com/ |

I have noticed that you are an editor.
Possible for dmoz to supply a service like USFreeads? Example: http://multifinanceit.com/it/logistics/logistics.htm Scroll down. Kjell Gunnar Bleivik http://www.multifinanceit.com/ http://www.blognorway.com/ |

I'd just like to say Thank You Dmoz, I've just been listed after months of waiting. I suppose patience is a virtue.

Whatever you do...dont sign up for one of the auto submit sites to get you into DMOZ...if you do.. cbp will make it his life duty to ban your site from ever getting in....not that you really need dmoz...just a matter of time and Google will either buy it or drop it...

I submitted our site last December, but we are still not indexed. It is obvious, as almost every web site owner wants to get in there.
My tip is: Why don't you apply for becoming an editor? They sure need editors for Norwegian sites too. And they will really appreciate that. Believe me.

Fact 1: Webmasters want a listing service from DMOZ
Fact 2: DMOZ is not a listing service for webmasters Fact 3: All complaints about DMOZ are casued by the incompatibility between 1 & 2 (BTW - this is a really old thread) |

I think that, related to DMOZ, these are just the best, if not the only, advice that you should follow.

I submitted my site SEO Workers Search Engine Optimization Consulting Company in December 2007 and nothing happen yet. And I know why. If you don't pay, you don't get included. I already reported two cases at DMOZ and they took care of them. I got more offers after that, and I know some others, but I discontinued reporting to DMOZ those issues, since they treat scammers better than high quality sites like mine anyway.
One thing is sure! I will never pay to get my site submitted and indexed in DMOZ. They should pay me and not the other way around. PERIOD! 0.2

I have been told that the only way to be sure of getting a site into dmoz is to become an editor! ( by somebody that works for a company that really knows about these things... at a trade show some time ago. ) my site was submitted about a year or more ago by a top seo company that deals with very large advertising company's big, big, money! free of charge as I helped a director with a personal computer related hardware problem as returning a favour. I know it was done correctly. but my site still not in, I personally think it is who you know as with getting none tendered work but that is only my opinion. I cant be bothered to apply for editors job as not that important. I think that who ever runs it should look into these things & sort them out before it all goes down hill. this maybe a good idea as the value would drop & the great google (fawn, fawn) would be able to buy cheaply and bring it back to its former glory! (end of rant) PS: I will with draw all of the previous stuff if I am listed... (grin) |

I have read the same. If it is true, that is not good. Even worse.

dmoz is not that important anymore! You don't get 100% assurance to be on top of the serp if you're site is listed in google try to focus more in quality backlinks and good content.

Hi, we are new to www.webproworld.com and love to get some help with SEO Page Rank and DMOZ. We submitted to them nearly 3 months back and so far we have had no communications of listing our site www.gymbods.com .We are under the impression that our page rank should increase if we are listed? Our page rank has dropped from 4 to 1 and some pages are not listed or page ranked at all? We understand Google changed their algorithm, so this could have affected our page rank as well. We would really appreciate if we could get some advice for getting listed correctly in DMOZ and improving our page rank. thanks is advanced - Adam

Join the queue (line) says the cynic at the back of it... Which reminds me of a story... A long time ago in the UK (before VHS tape) people used to go out to the cinema... there were many queues for different priced tickets. when one queue ran out of tickets a member of staff used to come out and shout "FAR QUEUE FAR QUEUE" so that the people would move to the queue behind. somebody always used to shout back "FAR QUEUE TOO!" in frustration I think this sums up DMOZ of course those in dress circle never had to queue up as they bought tickets in advance or knew the manager. This in MY OPTION sums up DMOZ ...... Last edited by ron angel; 12-10-2008 at 06:16 PM. |
