Understanding directory listings correctly
Hi this is my first message for quite some while so I would like to get some feed back in regards to directory listings.
Our site www.bodyjewelryshopping.com has been around for about 3 years now. I understand the importance of being listed in dmoz, yahoo, google directory etc... My problem is Im still not listed and it must be over 6months ago since I submitted for review and I want to know how I can check if it is still in line to be checked????
I dont want to resubmit it again if it is pending. Would appreciate some feed back from you all.
Ps we will be starting up our links push next week so anyone in similar industry feel free to send us an email and we will be happy to share.
Steve

As I understand it, DMOZ no longer accepts inquiries about submissions. If you' ve submitted, you may get listed in a day, a month, a year, a decade, or never. There is nothing you can do about it one way or another. Resubmitting won't help.
The Google Directory is a slightly modified and only periodically updated DMOZ dump. Yahoo you'll have to contact directly.

Yes, DMOZ discontinue submission status checks May 2005:

For a better chance of getting listed in DMOZ, helping the editors can only help you! Make sure the information you submit is within the guidelines found on the site with clear, concise and non-promo language.

As you are a commercial site, you'll have to pay Yahoo!
As minstrel pointed out, the only way to get in the Google Directory is via DMOZ.
A final point, instead of continuing to spend time waiting for a submission that could be another six months waiting for review, keep building your content and other linking efforts and this will pay large dividends for your site too!

I read through the link saying that you can not check the status with thanks. So now my next question is if I submit it again as the site has just recently changed completetly within the past two weeks would it be okay to do so?

My opinion is that it probably won't hurt and probably won't help.
Various DMOZ editors have been inconsistent in their statements about whether resubmitting penalizes you. Some have said it bounces your site to the bottom of the queue if it is still waiting for review. Others have said there IS no queue so it won't hurt.
If it's been sitting in the queue for some time without review, it will probably continue to sit there forever. If it has already been rejected, you won't know why it was rejected but my guess is if it was rejected once it will be rejected again, unless there's been an editor change.
Since in all likelihood there is probably no hope to get your site listed in DMOZ anyway, I'd say you probably have nothing to lose by resubmitting.
If it's still not listed a month from now, maybe you could try resubmitting daily :o) (that's a joke!)

Hi Steven,
You can check the status of your ODP (DMOZ) directory submission at the forum their editors use: http://resource-zone.com/forum/ however they will most likely tell you that if it has not been 6 months since you submitted to them yet, to come back when it has been.

Your information is two months out of date, Willie.

Following discussion by, and consensus of Moderators and Administrators of this forum, we have chosen to discontinue site status checks effective May 21, 2005. Closure of the existing Site Submission Status forums will happen by this date, and we will not be accepting any new status check threads after this time. The submission status forums will be archived.

Please stop submitting - you have been keeping editors busy. You have only delayed your chances for review by not following the guidelines.
Once you have submitted ONCE to ONE category and got the confirmation screen, there is nothing more you can do.

Keeping them busy answering emails will help all the sites in that category get reviewed for sure. Better yet, set up an automailer to really make sure they know you're waiting.
I'm of course just kidding, but I've heard of people doing things almost that stupid.
Personally, I just submitted one site and forgot about it. DMOZ doesn't make or break an SEO campaign. We've got top rankings for competitive terms without a DMOZ listing on one of the sites in my signature, and top rankings with a DMOZ listing for the other site in my signature (which I didn't even ask to have listed there.)
Make a good enough site and it'll just show up one day. Keep trying to figure out how to make them list you and you've wasted a lot of time that you could have used improving your rankings by other methods.
Brian.

Thats easy - The only way to do that is make your site better than the ones listed in the category. Editors don't care if your competitors are listed. They want to add sites that increase the value of the category... listing a site that does offers what is already offered by another site in the category is often not going to happen.

The emphasis
The emphasis was on "make", as in trying to force the issue. That's a useless way to go with any directory. Just make the site good, work on your rankings without DMOZ, and a good site will make it in no problem. Become obsessed with DMOZ and you're wasting your online life away.
A watched pot never boils.
A watched ranking never changes.
A watched site never makes it to DMOZ.
Just keep doing the work and wait for the traffic to tell you that something happened.
Brian.
