Default Ranking differences

Hi everyone,
Sorry if these are VERY basic questions but I can't seem to get a consistent answer to either.
Firstly, My website's getting a page one ranking in Yahoo but is so far down in Google you need the Hubble telescope to see it. Is this because there are so many more webistes regsitered on Google or because their crawlers interpret my pages differently.
Secondly, it's an old chestnut about hyphenation in a domain name...can crawlers read 'white-elephant' but not 'whiteelephant' in a domain name, or, as i suspect, does it depend on the search engine?
Cheers!

Both search engines use different algorthims with emphasis on different things to rank sites. eg Google puts more emphasis on anchor text ofincoming links and Yahoo puts more emphasis on on-page factors.
Age of links is also a big factor in Google.

Your second supposition is correct.

Thanks for that. Most useful to know. Anyone with any clues about hyphenated domain names and crawler psychology?

Not worth the effort.
