Default DMOZ Top Listed Domains

Being an ODP editor myself, I know there are some opportunists that are editors, and to some degree there are checks and balances, but I believe certain Metas pretty much do whatever they want. Some of these can be justified, so please don't think I am saying these are not supposed to be there (judge for yourself). Here is a listing of the domains with the most listings in DMOZ:

If you look, I think you will find some real winners (sarcastic tone of course). :)

Default I've never understood...

I've never understood why any domain needs more than 2. Why isn't their a limit on a per domain basis? Just put them in the best category, 2 if necessary, and call it good. That'd make it a much more concise list in some of the categories.

Brian.

The top listing, CNN, has thousands of listings that lead to dad links, but nobody has had time to fix the problem (or so I am told). There are lots of places where the editor favored their own site, which really when you think about it is normal human behavior. :)

Personally, I think DMOZ has gone to hell in a handbasket in a lot of ways. It needs a commercial influx as soon as possible. As much as I admire the concept of volunteerism, there's a glass ceiling every 100% volunteer organization hits, and DMOZ hit it about 3 years ago.

So yeah, you're gonna get a few (not the vast majority, but a few) DMOZies destroying the credibility of the site as a whole for everyone.

I wouldn't even give DMOZ a second thought except that they're still tied into Google for "Directory Results" and that many sites mirror DMOZ content because it's a quick and easy way to fill a site without having to come up with original stuff.

Anyway, if you're a DMOZ editor, throw out the concept of a one-time, or even an annual fee. I'd say most of us would be willing to pay it, and the ones that bitch most would likely be the spammy sites which you don't want anyhow.

Amen, Adam!
I'm not even going to bother submitting my sites to DMOZ anymore. There are lots of good directories out there.
