Default Keyword in Domain Name

How important is it to have your main keyword in your domain name? Is it worth thousands of dollars and the the hardships involved in re-branding the new name. It appears to me that it might be worth it all. Many of the sites that show up on the first page of Google have the search word in the domain name.

Default It ranks well because...

It ranks well because people link to it with the domain name in many cases. This naturally places importance on the site for the keywords. If that's the only keyword you're after, then it could be very well worth the effort / expense. If you want more keywords and this is just the traffic term (traffic terms usually bring visitors but don't convert as many to customers), then it might not be worth it at all.

I guess the answer is that it is worth it depending on your intended use.

What if it is my main keyword. Can you spell this out more?

Also, if you list a keyword within the url does google pick it up? for example doghouses.com, are the key words both dog and houses?

Default toolpartsdirect.com

We have toolpartsdirect.com as a domain. We've been #1 for tool parts for as long as I can remember now. This isn't because of the URL, but rather because of people linking to us with the text "Tool Parts Direct". If your company is named after the URL, and your URL is your keywords, you'll do well with that term. Otherwise, it won't mean any more than something memorable for repeat traffic.

Default More Info

There's been some good discussion and examples on this topic in another topic; I'll post that link versus recycling the info.
