Default Help : Length of data that SE use

I need to rethink about burf's internal structure for holding data

Do you think that SE (google yahoo etc)limit the amount of information they index for say title and meta

At current, burf will index any amount of meta data which i decided its a bad idea

Should i limit the title , meta keyword and meta desc to 255 char?

Advice on this would be very helpful

Default I'm guessing

I'm guessing that 255 is still too much. 80 seems like plenty.

I have my experimental engine running with 74 for title, 40 for meta desc, and 40 for meta keywords. Anything above that has seemed like spam to me.

Brian.

Default Use Search Engine Results for Example

Awesome question. Like brian.mark I can only guess, though you'll see and hear different answers depending on who you ask and where you go for info. SO, here's what I've decided to do as a "temperature check" so to speak - I check to see what does Google lists, or other search engines too, if you want, and come up with a happy medium.

Google for example, seems to display titles up to about 60 characters, or about a total of 65 with spaces. They also only list about 155 - 160 characters for a site description. Notice when you see results in Google the "..." at the end of a title; they've cut-off the "excess". The same is true with with the site's description.

Y! and MSN differ a bit, so again, go with Google, or come up with a happy medium.

Personally, I try to keep my titles, descriptions, and keywords, short, relevant and to the point. In other words, I try to follow what I see Google list in the first two, and like brian.mark I keep my keywords just as short - too many is getting risky IMO; better to have a few highly relevant keyword (or phrases) indicative to that page and not try to unrealistically capture terms or get anywhere near a gray area of being considered spamming.

Take a look at the engines and directories and use them for a guide.

On the basis of my experince i can tell you:
The recommended length for title is 70 characters with space
for meta description :: 200 characters with space
for meta keywords :: 255 characters with space
