Default Opinions on keyword density article?

Hi everyone,

I recently read an article "debunking the myth" of keyword density analysis. The article can be found at http://www.e-marketing-news.co.uk/Mar05/garcia.html.

I'm a copywriter who does a lot of web copy and a fair bit of SEO web copy. I've always understood keyword density to be a fairly simple measure of the number of instances of your keyword phrase in comparison to the total wordcount. I have no knowledge of the inner workings of search engine algorithms, but I've had quite a bit of success with my own website, which now ranks on page 1 of Google.com for my primary keyword "copywriter". I've always believed this is because I've optimized my site well for my primary keyword, and also worked hard on my backlinks.

However, this article (from the little of it that I understand) suggests that things are very different to how I thought they were.

I'd like to know what the real experts out there think of this article?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Glenn Murray

The article proved to be an interesting read.
I must say, reading it does not encourage me to change any of my routines, however.
I look at it as one persons deep insight, and leave it at that.
Thanks for the link.

That article goes way beyong practical copy writing and though it may be useful, for your every day writing it won't be possible to follow.

In my experience and logic the basic rule is:

Everything is relative so keyword density as well, :)

The keyword phrase you are targeting in a text needs to have the highest density and has to show up in the proper places. Search engines still aren't able to read between the lines or understand that many things can mean something else than they literally mean.

So a joke in the title really is out of the question,.. :) You need to use your keywords there.

Keyword density of 1% is fine if it is the highest keyword density.

Keyword density of 5% is fine if it is the highest density.

For the rest it should be pleasant to read.
