Default New guy here with a new guy question...how long does it take

I am curious as to how long it takes to get your site crawled by Google, Yahoo and MSN.

They say it could be over a month or even over two months I believe in some cases to get the site crawled. However, when I put in Novatex Solutions my page is displayed in the Google and Yahoo search results but not MSN's.

Why is this? If my site has not been crawled yet how can I show up in the results right away? Is it do to the form I filled out when I applied to have my site crawled by Google and Yahoo?

I have done some SEO for a Houston based company http://www.caldertesters.com and have had excellent success on Yahoo and MSN (top keywords for company are pneumatic testing, hydrostatic testing and valve testing) but Google still eludes me for stunning rankings. Why is that?

Well I guess I will stop blabbering like a new guy and wait to get some feedback which from the looks of the responses and expertise I have seen on this site should be insightful.

Many thanks,

Your site is definitely in Google, MSN, and Yahoo. A new sites will usually take no more than a week to be indexed as along as there are good links coming into the website.

'They' told you that it takes a few months and 'They' is probably trying to sell you something.

Ranking, especially in google takes much much longer, maybe even years for some very competitive search terms. But, the initial indexing is pretty quick.

Ranking in Google along with MSN is heavily weighted by anchor text links coming into your site. Google also has the sandbox which prevents newer sites from ranking well. You site sounds like it is in the google sandbox.

Default So could it be that...

Could it be that the 2 to 3 months they are talking about is the time that it would take for us to start to appear on the top assuming we do all of the work behind the scenes correctly and attain a good page rank?

I was under the assumption that page rank was the most important thing when it came to where you appear.

So in the competetive industry of Internet Solutions, with a good strategy and diligence in our online marketing thorough links and directories and good meta tags how long would you think it would take to climb to a top ranking?

Sorry if these questions are a little hypothetical in nature, I am only trying to get a feel for the time it takes to achive good rankings using solid techniques.

Thanks,

Page Rank actually plays a very little if any role in actual ranking. Many high ranking sites have good PR, but this is not the cause of their good ranking, but rather an effect of their promoting their website As far as the length of time to rank well. It totally depends on your targeted key phrases and how well you promote your site. I would say for my site it takes at least a year just to make it out of the sandbox. This means that it isn't even possible to rank for a year. Once your site can rank, you have to actively promote it with lots of links. Links are what makes sites rank well in Google.

You should be able to rank in MSN and Yahoo much sooner than in Google. Yahoo likes lots of optimized text and not as much link. MSN likes links like google.

I would say for arguments sake, that it would take 2 - 3 months to rank well in MSN and Yahoo, and 14 - 18 months to rank well in google. This is also assuming that you know exactly what you are doing, you are good at doing it, and your search terms are reasonable. Your not really going to rank well for a term like 'search engine' in any amount of time.

Default Take a look at your meta tag description

TexasJeff,

from a quick look at your site I can see MSN has indexed 11 of your pages and records 17 links. From memory I think it crawled your site on 18th April.

I note that you're saying you searched Novatex Solutions. If you want your site to appear in response to this search your should include "novatex solutions" within the site's meta tag description. Currently there's no mention of it there.

Thanks for the good info.

So it seems that from scattered information to attain good page rank = reasonable keywords then time then links then good page content / meta tags.

I guess I need to start to build a good network of links.

Any suggestions for how to best establish alot of links coming to your site? I am reading lately that relevance plays a pretty big role. I have perused through Arelis but am wondering if there might be better tools or strategies out there.

Again I say many thanks for the great info.

Still the best way to get links is to exchange with relevant sites. Google is placing more weight on relevant links but any links help. Otherwise providing good content and possible getting customers to link to you is also a good way to get more links.

What search terms are you targeting?

Jeff,

looks like MSNbot crawled your site yesterday. Try the link below.

Mind you it looks like it only crawled seven of your pages. It didn't crawl the page with my link. Mmmm. I'll have to try and tease the little critter back out.
