I keep reading about people checking to see if their site is fully indexed. Can you help me understand how one finds out how and if a site is indexed?
Is it something on a search engine that one checks, or does one need software to do this? And what is the best way to insure that indexing occurs. Being new to the game, I need to educate myself in this area. Thank you in advance... dEAN |

There are a couple of ways to see if a site (or page) has been indexed. One is just searching the SE in question for the domain name. Another is doing a "site:" search; here is such a search for WebProWorld. And finally, you can see if there is a cached version of the page; here is such a search for WPW's home page.
Yahoo and MSN have similar operators for their SEs. Results for any of these searches would indicate that the SE is aware of the page and has at least partially indexed the page/site. Hope that was what you were looking for. |

You can also use the online tool at MarketLeap to help. There tool checks your pages on several search engines. Here you go: http://www.marketleap.com/siteindex/default.htm

Thank you all for your help, it has been useful to me. I am wondering if anyone knows how often the search engines do their web site updates once they have done an initial indexing?
I am always updating them... thanks dEAN |

Once your site is indexed and you get some good links into it, the SE's will re spider it about every day to every other day. Once your site gets a lot of links into it, it will be spidered multiple times per day, even hourly. Its not an exact science, but in my experience, the more inbound links, the more spider visits.

Thanks again for your assistance.
I apologize for being so thick, but what is an "inbound link". Do you mean web pages other than the home page that has content? Do pages that have links to other web sites help as well with successful indexing? I have done a site that has an opening "home page" with links to other areas that relate to the home page. This opening page may not be much more than a starting point to those areas of interest. You may view it here... http://trailpair.com/ You may view the site here, although I am still waiting for content to the home page main text. Also, in IE 6, the latest service pack, I notice that I get an error message in the lower left hand corner of the window and I can't find out why. Any speculation on that would help also. Thanks dEAN |
