Default Hyphens vs Underscore vs DMOZ

I've seen many postings in many forums that hypens should be used in file/folder names rather underscores.

The simple widget test of typing in:
blue widgets
blue-widgets
blue_widgets

....and seeing which 2 sets of results are the more similar - would also back up hyphens rather than underscores.

However, DMOZ uses underscores?

Are there any reasons for this other than historic naming conventions?

Someone actually ran a test:

http://www.webrankinfo.com/english/s...underscore.php

--> hyphen = divider
--> underscore = combiner
