301 or Domain Forwarding

I've registered a new domain name http://www.reviewguideonline.com and would like my old domain http://www.whateversource.com to redirect to it.

A few question in mind:
1. Should I create a .htaccess with 301 redirect?
2. Should I use the domain forwarding from my host

I am now using domain forwarding. I've tested it using various tools to check the header and it is returning different results. Some says 301 and some says 302. Why the differences? Who should I believe?

How would I get google to crawl my new site?

From what I've come to understand a 301 redirect is the best.
