Default What do I do to get ranked with my new blog?

I've just created a blog page in my website.
What do I now do to get it crawled and ranked?
Do I submit comments to other peoples blog pages and hope theyll add me to their blog whcih contains a link back to mine?

If not, what does pingback achieve when I have selected it to operate?
Can the other web site refuse my pingback and therefore not show it on their blog & i get no gain from it?

Interesting topic, I'm in the middle of promoting a Blog as well and have had similar questions. I've submitted my Blog to Search Engines as well as Blog Directories so far. Still looking for other ways to promote it.

Exchange links with other sites just like you would with a normal website. Also, change links with other bloggers. This is the most popular way bloggers use to boost their rankings.

Treat your blog like you would with any other website, and promote it the same way.

Can you say where a good place would be to look for blogs on my particular topic?
Would you search on topic + blog ?

I would check what blogs are popular with Google, Yahoo and Msn then create at least three so to have a broader audience :)

Link the blogs , thats a start :)

I submitted our blog http://www.sallysummers.blogspot.com/ to the normal search directories and engines as well as a large list of blog specific directories. Here is where I started - http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55/, http://www.aripaparo.com/archive/000632.html , http://www.lsblogs.com/directory_and_search.php , and http://4webresults.com/blog/blog-rss-directory

This should keep you busy.

Default sports blog

We submitted our Sports Blog to google and yahoo and msn, that's it. But we also heavily targeted blog directories and other sportsblog websites for reciprocal links. We've also got an XML feed. There are a ton of XML RSS websites we submitted our feed to.

Default sports blog

We submitted http://www.cybersportsblog.com - our sports blog to google, yahoo, and msn, that's it for SE's. We also created an XML/RSS feed, and submitted it to all the sites out there for that. We then have really started pursuing reciprocal links from other sports sites, and sports blogs, and basically sites that match our content.

Here is a good read about Yahoo! and Rss:

http://my.yahoo.com/s/faq/rss/publishers.html

The "How do I make sure my latest post appears immediately?" section is pretty technical but very interesting.

I also advise you use mod_rewrite/permalink on your blog. This will put your keywords in the posts URLs. Most blogs engines have this option and it will help your blog get better rankings.

Hope this helped.

Send a ping below eveytime you make an update -
http://pingomatic.com/

and a bunch of sites including Yahoo will come visit and list your pages.

Then as mentioned elsewhere find relevant sites to exchange links with.
