You only have to lok at your web stats to see why Google is number one. They crawl our websites more frequently than anyone else and update their systems with the retrieved data very quickly afterwards. I've seen new pages that I've added appear in Google the following day, it's very impressive. No other search engine does this and this ultimately leads to a better more comprehensive database.
However, they do have a few issues and one that I'm not that happy with is they put just a little too much emphasis on back links.
I've seen websites with very little content rank much higher than websites full of content just because they have more people linking to them. I've also seen websites rank #1 and #2 for completly unrelated keywords just because they are part of a bigger corporation that is ultimately a PR9 or PR10. This in my very humble opinion isn't a great way of doing things but for now we have to just put up with it.
As cpb says; ultimately, everybody aims (or at least should aim) to be number one in their field. Those that succeed are happy. Those that are not, just need to work harder. It's all about competition and competion is always a good thing because it keeps Google on their toes. I'm sure they will be around for a very long time to come.
