Foreign Language SEO

Apart from keyword research, are there any particular tips or pitfalls to watch out for when implementing SEO on a foreign language version of a site.

I realise it is not just simply a case of translating an existing site as a keyword phrase may not translate properly, or may be completely different in a foreign language so am just asking if anyone has had any experiences (good or bad) of doing so.

One final point - are the SE algorithms exactly the same for each language version of their site or are their subtle differences?

Example, are there similar weightings for say, the Title element of a page ranked on Google.de as there is for Google.co.uk?
