Default Description Meta tag

Although the title of a page should be unique and should include your targeted keywords for that page
I've heard a number of opinions that the meta description tag should also be unique for each page.
Does this not go against the wisdom that the meta tag should be a general description of the site. Surely if it's a general page description then it should be constant on each page?

I hope you can shed some light.

Maybe it's just me, but i've never heard of having the description tags the same on every page. If you create keyword and description tags they should be unique for every page. We use the hompage as a general description of the site.

Having a specific meta description for each page is commonsense SEO. I follow the idea and am repeatedly struck by how different search phrases take people to different pages of my site. I cannot fail to be the beneficiary of this result.

As mentioned above, it would be beneficial to have a unique description tag on each page.

Default Meta tag description

Here's a tutorial http://www.searchengines.com/metadescription.html that describes the meta tag description as - "The meta description tag describes your site's content".
Surely it should be rephrased to a "page's content" rather than a "site's content" which would imply uniqueness?

Its probably a "typo" - I think we all accidently probably say 'site' when we mean 'page' and 'page' when we mean 'site' often

Ditto as above - the description and keyword tags should be specific to each PAGE.

Hi mickywall,
As reiterated here, it makes sense for the meta description tag to be unique on each page.

Here's an article where someone tested her description tag by adding different words in the tag yet not on the webpage. She wanted to know whether keywords and phrases used in a meta description affects a page's ranking in the search engines. Check out the interesting results at The Meta Description Tag by Jill Whalen
Have a great day!
