Default SEO Extension for Firefox

I just finished an SEO extension for Firefox called SEOpen. It is fairly simple right now, but I have some plans for the future once my skill catches up to my ambition...

Basically you can check Google cache, Google backlinks, Yahoo backlinks, keyword density, PR, and a little more via right-click.

You can read more and download the extension here. Feel free to contact me with bugs and feature requests, I'll add them to my "to do" list and try to knock them out as I learn a little more about what I'm doing...

Default SEOpen 0.3

Thanks Martin, I'm glad you liked it.

I just finished an update. New features include:
  • Wayback Machine (Archive.org, called "Archives" in the extension)
  • Ability to check robots.txt (works on sub-domains, too)
  • Google "site:" search (lists all pages in Google\'s index for the domain)
  • Yahoo "site:" search (lists all pages in Yahoo\'s index for the domain)
  • Whois info
  • Cleaner code

I tested it on Firefox 1.0 and 1.0.1 on Linux and Windows. Again, read all about it here.

LOL, PHP on the brain!

I've actually been thinking more about starting to tinker with stuff for Windows (I can hear the linux users cringing). Modifing IE is of course much harder (and often not legal), but I've been thinking about a desktop app for Windows and Linux that uses the Google and Yahoo APIs.

When I come across a new site for me, the first thing to do is a 'right click'. Great tool! Hope there are more features to come soon. Is there something I can cooperate - beta testing, or anything?

Thanks again,
Martin

Default SEOpen

I'm glad it's being put to good use.

Martin, thanks for the offer to help! This isn't really a brains-type of operation, the biggest help comes from bug reports and feature requests. Also, when you find an online tool that you like to use for SEO, send me a url and I'll see if there is a way to implement it.

Cheers!

Default Something wrong

The Page Rank link doesn't seem to be working right. All I get is a page from 1-hit.com with a banner at the top and the rest is blank.

I tried it on three different domains.

Do I need another pot of coffee, or is something down/broken somewhere?

Yeah, the site that provides that tool is flakey. Finding a better way to handle PR is on the "to do" list.

Also, if there's a Mozilla user in the house, can you try it out and let me know if it works with the suite?

If you downloaded SEOpen03.xpi, push ctrl+o, navigate to the xpi and double-click on it. You may need to make sure you are able to see "all files" when looking for the xpi.

Restart Firefox.

Good luck.

I especially like the links to the HTML Validator and WhoIs tools.

The HTML Validator makes it so much quicker to check multiple pages on a site.

I really love this tool, super work and great idea!

I have a suggeston for you though. The Google PR checker using 1-hit.com takes forrreeeever to load. Might I suggest using PHP Google PageRank Calculator Script? It can be downloaded in zip here:

http://www.googlecommunity.com/scripts/pagerank.zip

I'm not sure maybe you can upload it to like a tripod account or just point it to POST on their form on their page:

http://www.googlecommunity.com/scrip...e-pagerank.php

I use the script on one of my sites - it works great and loads fast so thought I'd mention it.

Another idea I had too, you might be able to integrate it somehow... Its encoded but at the end of the php file, he has invited people to ask for use of the code base:

// Want the source code? Don't be shy!
// For source code please email technician@gmail.com
// Subject: PHP PageRank Script Source Request
// Include your name, URL to your site, and what you'll be using this code for

Food for thought. Great job though!

Thanks everyone, I'm glad so many people are putting it to good use.

I am working on a new PR check. I actually built one myself using that googlecommunity script you mentioned, sjk. The problem is I can get it working on a test site, but not on the production site. PHP's file() function seems to be causing the problem; it seems to be disabled by my host for security reasons, but the other site on the same host seems to be working fine. I'm going to try and run php as cgi on the site and see if it will work that way. I'll figure something out.

But even that's just temporary, I'm trying to get the page's PR to display in the right-click menu, but I want to set up the options to disable this if you choose so it doesn't slow down too much for guys on slower connections.

I'm going to release a new version in a few days. I made the "site:" searches a little better, added MSN, google related, google's translate to english, changed the whois to whois.sc, and some code improvements.

Thanks again for everyone's support, I'll post here when the new version is done.

Default I still cant instal it ........ grrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi Flood6
Im getting frustrated with the instal of this script. I tried the ctrl+o and nothing happened and I tried double clicking it and it asks me to select a program to open it. I dont know what program to use to open it.

I must be pretty stupip if I cant open and instal a scipt. I have now associated another program to the xpi extension and I cant remember how to re-associate it.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

You're hitting "ctrl+o" when you're in firefox, right? Like you're reading this, just hit ctrl+o, right now. Alternatively, go to "File->Open File" Then navigate to where you saved the xpi.

I hope that helped.

That's great! Wow, what a connection.

Can you use readfile() instead or do you need to return the array with file()? That's weird that your host has one server with file() enabled and your production server has file() disabled. Maybe the problem is with PHP on your production server and it needs to be recompiled? I would try to get them to fix it if you haven't already before using the alternative method of running it as cgi. Good luck :)

Again, great work! I can't wait to see the new release; the new PR checker is going to be the shizzzznit.

That's much, much, much better! I'm glad you got the issues worked out with your prod server for the PR checker.

Everything works great and SEOpen is really a very useful tool.

Thank you so much for sharing! :o)

-- not sure how much it would matter but an Alexa rating might be a neat addition for later. Though I'm not sure how many pay attention to that, it would be a neat little feature. Just a thought I had.

Hi Ticketauction,

You would click on "Download SEOpen 0.4 Here" -- In Firefox, if you don't see the "Software Installation" box pop up then look just below the address bar at the top, you'll probably see a little tabbie thingie saying "Firefox is preventing software from automatically installing", there will be a little hyperlink thingie that says "click here to allow this site to install ......". Click on that and allow for suseroot.com. Then try again clicking "Download SEOpen 0.4 Here" and the rest should fall in to place... :)

Hi, wclew! What a coincidence; I'm working on the newest version right now. I actually just finished with it, I'm just polishing the new site I created for the extension.

Anyway, I'm going to release the new version in a few days, but if anyone is interested, you can get the beta here. It's stable, I'm just calling it a beta because a few things might change before the "official" release tomorrow or Thursday; and because I'm still finishing the site it's hosted on.

This version has implemented the new location of the Check PR tool (my new site instead of the old), I created a Header Viewer because the old one no longer works, I added some Alexa stuff, I added Yahoo's "linkdomain:" function, and you can also check for a site's inclusion in DMOZ.

Let me know if anyone has any problems, suggestions, etc.
