Default Do banners 'count' as inbound links?

We are in the midst of a link campaign -- building relevant inbound links to our web site. We have found some sites relevant to our industry that afford us very inexpensive banner advertising as well as inbound text links. Does anyone know if banners or images linking directly to our URL will count as inbound links to our site? Or if these banners will have a positive impact on page rank?

Don't forget to anchor your banner with some good keywords. An alt tag never hurts.

A link is a link is a link...
The banner will help your link popularity but not your link reputation! If you can, try to always get a link with your keywords or keyword phrase in the link text - much better!

We noticed in the Google backlinks that a site using photos from one of our sites are being counted as well. That is this site in question was feeding the image source from our server, not from theirs. The site doing so had failed to link back to ours and had it not been for the reference to them in our log files we would never had known they were doing this. But a check on the google backlinks showed them linking to us. Now whether just using the images from our site was the reason for the backlink is not certain but they were referencing the photos as their own, not very smart.
A quick change of the photo on our server to one less appropriate for them fixed this problem and they know longer feed of our site. Had they asked and not done this without consent, we would have been more than happy to allow the use of the photos.

Many sites use our photos and link the image back to us and all count in the Google backlinks. I would still prefer some good anchor text links but...

It certainly makes a difference in the images search. I have doe this with a couple of our sites. After all, what is the sense in loading the same content twice? The images moved way up in the image search.

Do images as links count the same as text links?

Default NO WAY

Image links are not comparable to text links. Anchor text is important because it essentially tells SE's "go here for this info". They retain this information and the credibility of the site you are linking from is important as well.

I have heard that you should ensure yourself that the banner or link ad is not generated by an ad server? Is there any sense or thruth behind this?

If it goes through an adserver, you get no benefit from the link for PR or ranking - still get the traffic benefit.
