Default Keyword links from high Page Rank sites

I have the opportunity to get a keyword link from a PR7 website. I had to pull some strings to make this happen. Just to clarify, a keyword link would read - Discount Digital Cameras.
So it's not just a link, but a link with a specific keyword that I will be submitting in my metatags.
I thought this would really help with our PR on the SERP's for that specific word. Then I was told that I need more than one link for a keyword to see a difference. I'm sure you all know how difficult it is to get keyword links from high PR sites (especially 7). So my question is - at what point do you see significant results for keyword links and is it worth the time (and sometimes money) to get those links for highly competitive keywords?

There are of course two ranking aspects to the link you propose. The addtional PR (which is dependant on the PR of the page and how many other outbound links on the page) which you may get and getting an additional anchor text link.

The PR IMO is of very little help in getting better rankings for your keyphreas.

An anchor text link is an anchor text link and its the number of them that count not the PR of the page it comes from.

IMO the one link from a PR7 page can be helpful to your PR if there are not many other links on the page, but other than that I doubt if it will make much difference in your rankings.

If the PR7 site that links to you has nothing to do with cameras, I don't think the link will benefit you too much at all.

If its only 1 inbound link for a competitive term, it won't help you too much either.

You need a lot of incoming links from different IP addresses on that term to really help you out like you;d like. Optimizing that page for the word too - not just a bunch of products, but some reviews, content too.

I would have to disagree. I don't have any links on sites that are related to my websites, and I have around 30 number-one positions on Google under some very competitive phrases. I've found it very difficult (if not impossible) to get your competitors to link to you.

The PageRank of the page that your link is on (and the number of links on the page) and the anchor text of the link are the most important determining factors for search engine placement.

I also have a problem getting my competitors to link to me??

It seems that a link from a pr7 would be to your advantage in the long run. Assuming that the link will be Reciprocal will you be helping them more? My humble opinion: I would rather have 10 pr5s linking to me than 1 pr7.

Please lorien1973, could you give us a few examples? Have you checked this theory?
If I get a link from Google's homepage to my real estate site, you're telling me that I would not get any benefit?

About the IP address, the ideas seem very different from place to place. I have thousands of links from the same IP address that are reported by the link: command in Google and that give benefit to the linked site.

I'd be interested to read your comments and explanations about these 2 ideas.

Thank you!
Best regards,
Olivier

Default Anchor Text

I have moved a site to a #1 ranking with just one anchor text link from a PR 5 site, but it was for a very uncompetitive term. I assume that the more competitive the term, the more much links you would need.

Default What?

Why would you want to link to your competition?
The true purpose of a link is to benefit your visitors. Sending them across the street is not benefitting them becuase you are the best!

You want "related" not competing links.

PR7 site with a text anchor is great, especially if it is a related service that serves your visitors.
me, I would get my site listed in the top directories, and get text links from related sites with customer focused design. Someone else, will tell you something different.

But we can angle a bit towards quality and quantity vs just quantity. Think of Google and their customer centric philosophy, and strive to get ahead of the curve ;)

It seems, that it all works, for a time, but the real quality stuff, keeps on working. Like the clean and dirty seo debate. Dirty seo works till it doesnt, clean seo keeps on working, so you choose ;)

I'll also mention that I do not believe it takes more than one link from a PR7 site to see a difference....

It all depends on your competition....

A link from a PR7 site with your exact keyword could definetely put you in a top possition... Based on the industry and number of related sites targeting that keyword...

The more the better - but every one counts...
