Because they are DEFAULT search engines - they may attract less experience surfers - who my not be that search savy or persisitant and also may be basically satisfied with browsing the first few relevant sites if not the first
Google may attract the most savy and most analytical users
while Yahoo! may be somewhere in the middle
esoteric engines like AllTheWeb and some Meta Engines may attract more european and Tech webmasters/SEOs who may be comparing results or analyzing backwards links.
Yahoo directory and DMOZ may possible have a higher than average marketing surfers who are looking for Good leads and prospects
this also may explain why Google's Adwords are not as competative as Overture - especially when the Sponsor Links are "blended" in the SERPs
