How do I raise my SE lisitngs

I am a newbie and I have been speaking with various SEO pro's for their services.
My questions is this....
A couple of seo's have offered me to do what they call a entrance door. I have heard thaqt this is not in line with google guidelines. I do not want to be banned just for a short time of first page ranking.
Also how does one know who to hire???I dont have a big budget, so I cant afford a name brand se company. I have also been told that because my site is a shopping cart that it will never list well???

There are a few Search engine friendly shopping carts available on the Net.

Good content will always ensure your position in the SEs. Focus on your products. You can employ a good copywriter to improve your content. That's what a good SEO will do.

Do not use doorway pages. Your competition will find you and they will just report to SEs and your business will be ruined.
