Hello, this is my second post here and i have a few questions. I think i may have posted in wrong forum before.
For starters i have a small network of like 32 websites and i have them linked together mostly off the same host and i was wondering if this is hurting my link poularity. i have read that the sites have to be all on seperate ip's to not get penilized anyone have any insight on this subject? there is a new java app that shows you a graphical link structure and i can enter in any domain off my host and even my host's domain and it comes up blank and i know the sites link together. if anyone could shed some light on this subject please do! thank you in advance |

Excessive cross linking between any network of sites is considered risky - its just not clear where the 'line in the sand' is between excessive (and attract a penalty) and not excessive.
This is even more riskier if the network of sites are on the same class c IP address - it still can be done, but the "line in the sand" is probably moved. Just make sure that the linking between the sites is minimal, natural and of use to the visitor and you *might* get away with it. You may want to do a search for Hilltop algorithm (we have had threads here) in which this is discussed -- its then up to yu to make a judgement call if Google have implemented what the Hilltop documents call affiliated site (ie same class IP address). I agree with it being risky, but as long as all the sites are different and you don't excessively link to each other you should be ok.... I have many sites on the same IP range but on sepereate IP's - they are all very different and havent been effected as far as I have noticed yet - but they don't inter link... a few link to one but thats about it...

It's definitely risky if you cross-link among sites that you own--even riskier if they're on the same IP or on the same class C block.
My take on it all is this, though: Essentially, you don't want your little network of sites to be located on an island. You want your sites to be a good member of the Internet community--which means that you need on-topic links in to your sites from other websites, as well as on-topic links out to other websites. The better member of the Internet community you are the less you will have a problem with your own little network of websites.
