Default Link Exchange is SEO Strategy?

I have been reading posts and articles in WPW and the internet, and I know that link exchange (inbound links) is an important factor in page ranking. But I dont know how to actually apply and put into practice how to do that.

How do I devote my time to building links? Does anyone know if the affiliate links to your site can help with page ranking or can the SEs recognize affiliate links and not count them? I mean, in a way, if affiliate links count, then that's a great way to "buy" inbound links, correct?

Can anyone shed some light?

Yeah, backlinks count most. Go on google or yahoo and search sites similar to your category and request to exchange links. Try dmoz too. The text they use to link your site should be related to your content and have a reasonable amount of competition(don't use "computers" or "eating", maybe 3 words if you're a small site). Good luck.

So, I would need to go and individually find sites to request links?

What would be a determiner? Is there an easier way?

Default There isn't an easy way!

...well, there is an easy way if you join a "link farm" - these are large groups of sites who agree to share links to each other. Most link farms are viewed badly by Google and Yahoo.

Inbound links are important but we should qualify this: RELEVANT inbound links are important.

Affiliate links don't tend to help because they normally use coded URL redirects which spiders don't like following. It's worth adding that the anchor text/image ALT for an inbound link is also important.

For example, if you sell "Widgets" and lots of other Widgets sites link to you, this would be viewed well by the engines. Lots of links from "Thingies" sites wouldn't be given the same level of importance.

There's lots of strategies for getting quality, relevant inbound links:
1. Do a search on keywords related to your product then see if you can get listed on any of the sites which appear in the results list
2. Check the sites which link to your competitors and ask them for a link to you
3. Get listed in quality web directories
4. Create content which others can use to add value to their own sites e.g. articles and advice (not sales pitches!)
5. Post in forums - you've already started!

Two-way link exchanges are a popular strategy although there is evidence that the engines are gradually trying to decrease their importance. The key is long-term, quality inbound links. Become an information hub that people want to link to - and you're on your way.

Beware of short term strategies, they'll cause more work in the long run!

Thank you guys,

I appreciate the help. I guess it looks like link building strategies have no magic bullet way to do it. Just like content building, it needs to be nurtured with vigilance.

And as I understand it, to build a whole strategy, I would need to go through links and keywords again to find sites with content that would COMPLEMENT my site, correct?

Any suggestions for a service-oriented site?

Is there a systematic way of adding:
1) reciprecal links
2) one-way in-bound links?

Default Follow-ups...

Interesting report here about topic-based page rank:
http://www.seoresearchlabs.com/seo-r...gle-report.pdf

When I mentioned 2-way exchanges being downgraded, I was thinking of the automated "submit your link" style exchanges which generally lack any relevancy or quality page rank. As topic-based link algorithms advance, this style of exchange will be increasingly outmoded.

Good articles here about link exchange strategies:
