Default question here........

I know this should be basic but a friend and I disagree. I recently purchased a new larger monitor. I set it for 800 x 600 (which I feel, as I make my sites they should be designed for) and she feels I should set it for 1024 x 768 so it isnt so large on my screen.
What is the "average" way everyone else is setting theirs? I hate a website I have to scroll left to right to read it.....

I have my monitor set to a higher resolution, but I design for someone that has their monitor set to 800 x 600.

Agreed. My monitor is set at 1280x1024 but I still design for 800x600. This gives me an opportunity to see how the site looks on larger resolution screens. With all new monitors defaulted at 1024x768, it can't hurt to see how the site looks with extra space.

I've my monitor at 1600*1200 but design for 800*600 whenever possible, I personally prefer to visit at approximately 1024*768 browser size and keep multiple windows open.

Same here I have mine set at 1024x768 yet I design for 800X600. I am also starting to design smaller sites such as 600 wide so it has the same effect at all resolutions.

Stepping backwards a bit don't you think?

Rather than keep changing your monitor resolution from one setting to another you can use this tool http://www.wpdfd.com/restest.htm to emulate 800 x 600.

Hey, that was a neat link - had to add to bookmarks, thanks a bunch!

Minor tweaking and our pages are fully readable on 640... Nice ;)

A lot of the time I design for 1024x768 these days. I know I've read research on this but can't find anything in my bookmarks, however I am sure I read somewhere, that more users have a res of 1024x768 than 800x600 these days.

Found some info.

- 1. 1024 x 768 - 48.3%

- 2. 800 x 600 - 31.7%

- 3. 1280 x 1024 - 13.6%

- 4. 1152 x 864 - 4%

- 5. 640 x 480 - 1%

- 6. 1600 x 1200 - 1%

- 7. 1152 x 870 - 0.2%

Seems like a pretty reliable source.

For one of my sites for the year:

1024 x 768 - 50.67%
800 x 600 - 35.65%
1280 x 1024 - 5.56%
1152 x 864 - 2.64%
640 x 480 - 1.00%

This is out of several hundred thousand visitors, so it is a fairly accurate model for all users.
