I am sure that I am the exception rather than the rule in that I am visited on a regular basis but the index order for my desired keywords has not changed for 3 months.

I usually see a new site fully indexed in about a week. It usually takes at least a month to get in the SEPRS, and then it updates the catch about every 30 days. Make sure the pages are the way you want them to be before you link to the site, because it takes forever to be reindexed and re-cached.
This is just from my personal experience.
