Here are a few of the Austrian ones. I will only include directories that do not specifically exclude foreign language sites. You will have to do the submission in German though! I will only include the freebies.

http://www.austria-seek.at/cgi-bin/search/add_url.cgi

http://funktionen.abacho.at/seite_an...basic_eintrag/

http://www.mair.net/anmeldung.htm

http://bellnet.de/suchen/anmelden-ko...ndardanmeldung

http://www.flix.de/cgi-bin/flix/gene...to_Neueintrag?

http://www.suchknecht.at/anmelden.html

These are all free and require no registration. I have checked the pages and they work, so the only excuse is the language! If anyone gets stuck, then I will give them a hand.

African directories. These are free, but may require to see a connection with Africa for the products you offer. Ananzi is South African and refused my site as not relevant.

http://www.afriqueindex.com/Categori...-africains.htm

http://search2.ananzi.co.za/Add_site/
http://www.skaffe.com/viewCat/1522

Got to get some work done inbetween!

I agree, it was a great idea to start this. Here are some more. I have tried them all, but not submitted anything. The links work anyway.
http://www.aardvarkbusiness.net/cgi-bin/biz/add_url.cgi
General, mostly Africa

http://www.fishhoo.com/cgi-bin/links/add.cgi
fishing

http://www.waheguroo.com/
Sikh directory

http://www.finderseeker.com/
Directory list by category and country

http://www.sfahq.com/International/
Special forces directory

when I first started my site I posted to a lot of directories simply by typing search engine;country and working my way through the atlas.

Thanks sfowler,

You may want to remove the first 2:

http://www.aardvarkbusiness.net/cgi-bin/biz/add_url.cgi

http://www.fishhoo.com/cgi-bin/links/add.cgi

they are PR0s, the others look fine!

Thanks again,
Ken

I just updated and checked my list of Directories, no I won't post 535 links to this page, though I could. They are here:

http://www.andilinks.com/sea5.htm

This page also links to another expanded list with descriptions.

Hey just so everyone knows we just completed a project, PAontheweb.com (http://www.PAontheweb.com) for a client who wants to list all the websites in Pennsylvania, USA. If you have a website in PA feel free to list it as well as use it! I would appreciate any feedback on what you think of the site, after all it did and still does take ALOT of time to upkeep.

German language, but foolproof. Only allows 5 URLs within 5 minutes, so go for a smoke!

Most of the German medical directories use ODP it seems. If you have a German language site it is not very difficult to get an ODP listing. My ex-wife works for a medical publisher, so I will ask her tomorrow.

How about somebody starts researching the Spanish directories, all those South American countries.... I will have a go at the French ones.

There are also places that are pseudo-Directory like that are good to get listed in. In the Health sector, these come to mind:

I don't know if this counts, but it is also important to get listed in the "phonebook" directories like http://www.superpages.com/

Would Local, Regional directories be of any use?
This one seems to rank well and there may be local or regional
directories more useful to service businesses than global directories would be.
For example?
http://www.siliconbay.org/networking_directory/

It’s probably material for another thread, but I thought I would ask.

Hi Greeneagle and Zooey,

First off Zooey you have a great site and a great idea, I wish you well with it. I also have an equestrian site. We operate riding holidays in Spain, and I will add a link to your site from my links page.

Greeneagle you said;

Quote:
zooey,

Off topic here
Yes Zooey's post is off topic, as is my reply, so maybe someone should move these posts to a different thread. However Zooey's post does have some impact on this discussion as Zooey's site does have a PR5, but the site is nowhere to be found in searches on google. Zooey's homepage is littered with the phrase 'dressage tests', however the sites at the top of a search for 'dressage tests' all have PR4. Therefore if PR was everything Zooey's site should come top of the tree. Maybe Zooey has used the phrase too often and google is penalising the site for spamming, who knows.

As for inbound links, quantity is not always that important, however quality is. My homepage has a PR5 with 35 inbound links (PR4 and above), however 20 of these inbound links are from internal pages of my site which all have PR4, leaving 15 external inbound links. The homepage of my site does have 224 sites that contain the url of my homepage, i.e. inbound links of PR3 or less, so maybe low PR sites do make a difference.

I do have a number of unreciprocated outbound links that I have added to the links page of my site. I have chosen these sites as they provide more information for prospective clients that may be thinking of buying my product. Maybe these outbound links add a little something to the PR of my site, who knows!

My site is returned reasonably well on searches with google, yahoo, etc. but could be better. It is no.6 on 'horse riding vacations', etc. However improvement is needed and this thread is an invaluable resource. I will be spending a lot of time looking through these links that have been listed here and adding my site to those that I feel will be good for my site.

Here are a few sites that have invited me to join their links pages. Some are directories, some are just expanded links pages.

Default More links and service

Here are some more, actually I have found over 1000 decent sites with links directories (multiple categories), but we offer manual link building as a service so I'm reluctant to share the rest I'm afraid. $1 a link, you can email me if you'd like to know more.

Some may have already been mentioned or are powered by the bigger directories. Hope it helps!

While that may be true, a lot of those automated submissions are junk.

What you do have to be careful about when you use these particular sites or any of them rather, is to use a throw-away email address. At least do not give them your main business email addresses ... you will most assuredly get Spammed from hell to high-water if you use it.

It is not the Free submit site that is doing it though. Their privacy policy is pretty much on the up and up. It is that the places that they are auto-submitting your listing to often require the email address and then the ballgame is over.

Some of these places use one of their throw-away email addresses for you, which you will notice if you watch the screens. But not all places will accept that address any more and yours will get substituted in it's place.

I have found that it is really not worth it. Usually if it is too easy to do, then there is not much of worth there to begin with. No pain, no gain as they say.

You might want to add http://www.skaffe.com/, http://www.mavicanet.ru/ (or http://wwww.mavicanet.com/ ) and http://www.illumirate.com/ to the list.

PR = Page Rank. see Google for a full explanation.
Often given much greater emphasis than it deserves. Recently I was dropped back from an PR6 to a PR5 but it had no effect on my position in the SERPS for my major keywords - still in the the top 2 or 3 also sales not affected in any way.

First of all, thanks you all. You all have resolved my dilemma. After furious submission and revisions of my website / SEO, I have yet to be able to receive a Page Rank at all. Links have been exchanged and confirmed and I have great keyword density. After months I still see myself with a rank of “0”. Yesterday I submitted to DMOZ.org since it is the mother search of Googles search engine reference. Now, all these Directories that you all listed are ….Intense. Thanks.

Just to let all of you know in regards of the submission to these directories. The more links that are present and the deeper these links are in the Directory service, the less PR points you will receive. I found this alogrithim that really makes sense. Hope it helps.

PR(AKA) = (1-A) + A(B/C)
PR(AKA) = (1-.85) +.85*(8/16)
PR(AKA) = .15 + .85(.5)
PR(AKA) = .15 + .425
PR(AKA) = .575

A = “.85” (Relevance PR points a links will get on your site)
B = the sites page rank (in this case 8)
C = links on that page (in this case 16)

Lets say I was linked from a site with a PR of 8, a total of 16 outbound links, the PR boost would be .575

Hope this is accurate and makes sense

It is from the original paper on PageRank. It is probable that Google uses a variation of it but they aren't telling us what it is.

The equation at that time was:
Code:
PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))
In the equation 't1 - tn' are pages linking to page A, 'C' is the number of outbound links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

Ron,

I knew where the original equation came from, just looked like the source may have been from an interesting application discussion specifically targeting Page Rank carry thru from incoming links :-)

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

Thanks so much for this wonderful topic. I know that it will help my one-man-at-a-keyboard website.

You folks are a wonderful resource. From all that I've learned from your forums, I've finally gotten my site to the top ten of Google and Yahoo (and # 1 on Teoma!), and it seem to be staying up there for a change! ( Do you think there's someone at Google who's going to go and make a big change in their algorithms because I wrote that?)

Thanks all,
- Paul

Okay, I've sorted out the general directories. You'll find them on http://madur.somalitalk.com/custom2.html
It's a free site, so if everybody tries at once it may run out of bandwidth!

I'll have a go at the others later. If anyone has comments to them then post them here and I will add them.

These are all industry specific or sector orientated directories. If there were comments in the post, then I have included them.

The rest of them are on there now. Let me know if anything is obviously missing. As I said, I can add any comments later.
