I am going through & submitting to each directory manually.

Read through this thread is full of useful Directory links were you can get non reciprocal links for free. Some of the directories listed do ask a fee. Check them through b/f you submit.

I've read from other forum about this directory owner complaining that his directory has dropped its ranking in Google, he suspects that Google is really going after paid directories just like websites selling links.

I heard that google gives penalties on submitting too much on directories, I can't find the link but I think it's still good to submit on directories as long as you're submitting on the active, reputable and good ones.

You can submit your site to directories as many as you can. That can help to increase your PR as well as the SERP ranking of your site.

I used all the directories listed here and found that most are not for free anymore . . .

some needs reciprocal and some are paid links . . . google hate paid links . . . is there any more free directories!
