Here is a list with 1000 directories or link directories on it.

Some time ago Greeneagle got a very useful thread going in which everyone in WPW's virtual community chipped in with lists of directories.

We took this one step further, compiled the whole lot, found a lot more, doubled the list then tested each one four times to see which ones actually worked.

Actually a lot of them just aren't bothered to ever validate your links or have some tricky conditions. We've identified which ones are worth the effort, to save everyone al ot of time.

I have a web page that I use to hold all of the directories that I use. Anyone is welcome to use it. I just added about a hundred more directories from going through this site so there are a lot that site show as PR0 on my site until I update them.

You can sort by PR, Name and category. its at

I'm looking for a way to automatically update PRs, anyone know how I can get PRs from Google using code so I can automate it. I figure I'll run the script every 10-20 seconds so that Google doesn't get upset... I hope. Takes forever to update by hand. I write in dot net, C# would be helpfull.

I've considered doing that however... That would mean me hitting their site several hundred times to update all of my list. I'm thinking that this would not make them very happy.
I'm wondering how sites like this do it. Do they get the PR from Google, or do they hit each site in question, if they hit the site where do they find the page rank? it doesn't show in the html for me to parse.

There are three possible automated ways to get PR values that I can think of.

1) Query someone else.
2) Use one of the unauthorized hacks.
3) Google directory (if they're in DMOZ).

Oh, and there is the 4th way... ask for some code and permission from Google, but I don't see that happening real easy.

A special note to everyone engaged in this thread:

Google and the other SE's have waged war on stripper sites and faux directories recently, trying to weed out the Adwords spam and other malfeasence. I expect this trend to continue. I sincerely believe that the survivors will be more focused specific directories that provide a real service over these burdonsome trash directories with thousands of pages gumming up the "works".

So submit accordingly!!!!

The rules have changed and I would bet that many General Directories here playing in gray areas of SEO (or worse) have taken a serious hit, and there will be more death toll yet.

New directory specific to Web Design and Development resources.

No reciprocal is required, though they're appreciated, regular links free, featured links reasonably priced, search engine friendly.

Not yet rated in Google, but site's main page is a PR4 and the blog is a PR6. I expect to see rank on this pretty soon.

Here is a new directory of vacation rentals in Hawaii, no cost for being listed, no reciprocal necessary. No PR yet to speak of since it's new, but working on that.

I think you misunderstood the purpose of this thread. The links are suppose to be links to directories where you can list your website. While you do have a nice site, it is not a directory.

Side note : To really have an effect on your site's PR, do you only submit to your own industry's directories and the big guys like DMOZ, Yahoo or Zeal, or will submitting to any high PR directories help your website in Google, Yahoo or MSN rankings ?

This is great! It's smart to focus in on a specific niche. Much easier to get that high SEO placement too. For instance, my site being related to weight loss can be hard to find with a generic search on "weight loss" as there are 72,300,000 sites today! Oh my... although with lots of hard work, I am listed at No. 69 but we all know how that can be changed in a split second.

But, look again: Search for "eft weight loss" and my site OneMoreBite-Weightloss is listed at Nos. 3 and 4 and is found via some of the other top 10 listings. It's easy to see how valuable honing in on a niche can be.

The "Bourbon" and "Jagger" updates hit the "Gray Hat" practice of reciprocal linking with nonrelevant sites particularly hard. If you choose reciprocal linking strategies, make sure your IBL is in a relevant location. You really don't want non-relevant OBLs bleeding out from your Site either!

Hi, a lot of people go on about the value of being in the big directories like yahoo with a high page rank,and how an element of it's PR Value will transfer to your site.My site is in most of them but
I think the main purpose of links should be to attract relevant visitors not increase your page rank as its meaningless to most people who visit a site anyway. I did a search on 4 page rank 9 directories and every page my site was listed in is Page rank ZERO. is there really any knock on benefit to your PAGE RANK being in these directories?

I don't in any way want to put a dampening effect on an important thread full of valuable resources.

Let's just make sure we understand and acknowledge the newfound importance of "Relative" Links, both incoming and outgoing after Bourbon and Jagger.

There is no turning back!

Just don't waste your time on links that are not truly relevant anymore.

The "Gray Hat" SEO practice of grabbing any and every link, anywhere, anytime is DOA. (Dead On Arrival).

It was way overdue when it happened.

Use your time wisely:
1) Select Relevant Directories for submission
2) Shy away from Reciprocal Linking Requirements

A "link" is not just another "link" anymore!

There are many levels of value ascribed by the SEs.
