From my experience with submitting to directories. There could be lots of them that are less than a PR 4. These could be new and could be a PR 4 or better at the next update. I submit to all free ones knowing that if it does gain PR at the next update and is no longer free then I am already in. I passed up once on a PR 0 which is now a PR 4 and is no longer free. Won't make that mistake again.

Anyway, when the mainpage has PR 8 and all other pages PR 0. When I end up on a PR 0 page, will I benefit anything form the homepage of PR 8? (I assume traffic from any directories is zero, I jus want the link.

Great thread.

Tis site has a comprehensive list of free web directories. This site ranks the free and paid web directories based on PR, Link Approval Time and more.

The site also takes into account negative factors that would not make it worth your time submiting to. Factors like scripted links that don't pass PR and sites with dynamically created pages that are not easily indexed by the search engine spiders.

I have seen the BBC mentioned in several lists of links. It is not a directory but the website for the British Broadcasting Company radio & TV. Their search function uses the UK version of Yahoo.

So you will not find a link to add your site to it.

This has become a fairly valuable thread over time.

With the changing algs and link building strategies becoming more "generic"-centered (without reciprocation), many new Directories are appearing.

Many of our members are posting for free submissions to help build these new directories. We all start somewhere. They could be a 5 or 6 in a year's time, who knows.

I have started inviting some of these directory developers to post their new directories here also. Let's help them build them and get off to a good launch!

Yeah, I just noticed google now has my site, www.mostpopularsites.net , as a PR4 in almost all their data centers. I was happy to see that (coming up from PR0).

What's really wild is listings buried deep in the directory have PR 4 (some are 3's most are 4), for example (TRUE at 13/18 datacenters I check):

I was really happy to see this, which means people who list at my site should enjoy High PR no matter how deep in the directory.

I switched one of my directories from just shopping to all inclusive:

Now it's bare to the bones, please swarm me with all ya got so I can fill this up (usual submission guidelines), and of course freebie listings.

It's also a new script I'm trying, it's very promising so far. I did try to catch all the listings from the old script, so if you see yourself listed already - that's why. There wasn't that many though, not too much demand for just a shopping directory I guess.

And if there's a category you need added, just use the request category link at the top and I'll try to add it.

I removed all the DMOZ farmed links - this directory no longer has ANY material (not even copied category structure) from DMOZ.

A few months back Greeneagle started a post sharing his list of directories and which everyone generously contributed to. I have since gone looking for more and doubled this list - now I'm offering back to WPW readers. For the past three months my staff have painstakingly tried almost every directory and discovered which ones work, which ones take forever to validate your listing and which ones are very picky and a waste of time.

However, you could end up wasting lots of fruitless time submitting to some of these directories and we recommend you read the details on the page about how to get help in submitting successfully to these sites.
