Here are some useful lists.

List of Free Directories - 2100 free directories.

List of Paid Directories - 2200 paid/reciprocal listings

List of Niche Directories - about 1500 niche sites.

These sites are kept current and have useful comments to help you choose the directories you want to submit to.

There is also an internet press section, with directory lists that include hundreds of listings for articles, blogs and forums.

The site has very close to 10,000 directory listings.

Yikes - this thread seems to have gone one forever! I just tried a few at random from several posts. And didn't seem to find any of what I would call "free". The most obvious ones being those that insisted on a payment, but most of those that didn't ask for money asked for a reciprocal link.

I think someone ought to point out that reciprocal linking is generally pointless. First up, you'll be putting a link to the directory on one of your pages, maybe quite a valuable page or even the homepage. The link they are going to give you is on some database driven page, full of other links, and buried deep within their site and more often than not (and with good reason!) the page your link goes on not only doesn't have any value, it's not even in Google's index! Even in a best case scenario you might get a link from a page that's as "valuable" as the page you add the reciprocal link on your site to. As far as Google is concerned if page A is worth 5 points and points to page B, and page B is also worth 5 points and points to page A the two links cancel each other out. Because they're worth the same. As stated above, the opposite is more likely - you are pushing the value of the page you are linking to.

The PR of a given directory is generally meaningless as well - it's whether or not the directory in question actually gets any traffic (excluding traffic from people here looking for places to get free links). The only way to tell if that's likely to be happening is by checking the directory's SERPs

I use that when I want to add a few free links. They carefully vet the sites they list, so you shouldn't get caught out with directories that add "nofollow" or javascript redirects to their outbound links to "hoard pagerank". I hardly ever do this anymore though. If you've spent an hour submitting your site to a bunch of free directories, you could have done far better to spend that hour crafting a polite and compelling e-mail to a webmaster of a quality site in your niche for a link. One decent link is worth a huge number of directory links.

I think simplicity and basically going to high ranking sites and seeing who they link to. A good way is http://www.dmoz.og. Looking in the catagory of your similar content and then link to them.

I see the lists that everyone has posted, but I have one question. Do you really get any benefit from being listed in these directories?

From the point of view of traffic, I doubt whether human eyes will ever see some of the pages where the links are placed, and the traffic value will be almost zero.

Similarly, the page rank of the pages where the links are placed are generally not very high (the directory's index page may have a high ranking but the link pages may be zero or even unindexed.

Is there anyone out there who has submitted to a lot of directories and seen a direct result? I am skeptical of the whole thing.

I am surprised to see that so many people still use directories. Google no longer even recommends DMOZ in their webmaster guidelines.

I must admit, I am a bit sceptical about submitting to directories. But then again...I suppose as long as all of the links aren't from directories it should be fine.

It just doesnt' seem right semhow for it to be so easy to get links - in this way at least...where's the challenge! Of course there's another part of me going "yay so easy!".

Thanks so much for the links guys. I've also been a bit sceptical about how submitting to directories will affect my page ranking and more so if it would have a detrimental affect on my sites. I thought google had begun to punish sites that had linked to multiple directories. Or am I totally wrong?

You can use article marketing to increase your search engine ranking. It is not a difficult thing to accomplish if you know how.

Article marketing is simply writing 350 to 450 word articles about the niche you are working in. Once they are written create a compelling headline and submit them to the various article directories.
One of the ways that the search engines decide the ranking of websites is based on the number of inbound links. In bound links are links that lead to your website and are counted by the search engines.
If your website has many inbound links then the search engines conclude that your site is more popular than those of a similar nature and your ranking increases.
