Default google ranking effecting yahoo ranking (vice versa)

Can peeps shed some light on wether one search engine ranking effects the other?

Also and most importantly, in a way you do not expect!

for example, yahoo rank decreasing everytime your google rank increases. I.E. one does not help the other but worsens the other.

I am sorry, i am new to SEO and have no stats for my site to show. It just seems when one search engine rank increases it balances out with the rest decreasing, so i cant win!

Yahoo used to show google results in the past, but right now yahoo and google's ranks are independant.
Generally speaking, each major SE has its own database nowadays which means that its results are unique.

Default Y! vs. G

Where I sit today, Y! is once again showing G results. It just started 2 days ago. I think Y! is about to come out w/ something big in the next couple of months. They are reverting to G results in several databases in the meantime.

Just my thoughts.

NO the rankings on one search engine have no effect on rankings in another search engine, unless of course the second search engine is getting its rankings from the first, but this is not the case in Yahoo vs. Google
