Best BackLink Checker
I have noticed within the financial industry a large drop off in accreditted backlinks... first at Google and now also at AllTheWeb.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the best or largest list of a sites backlinks?

Thanks for the offer but I know about that and it is not even as good as AllTheWeb... I want to know if anyone has any other software or crawler or engine that is working better than them...

Nice tool.
If you want a free desktop application check out link popularity checker at http://www.checkyourlinkpopularity.com/.
This tool will check, record and rank the link popularity of multiple domains, allowing you to compare them easily.
The only drawback is that it does not yet support Yahoo, which IMO is the search engine which gives the most comprehensive listing of links.

Unfortunately no SE appear to return all links anymore. Most/all seem to be taking Googles lead of only showing a sample.

Google doesn't show a sample. It generally shows only links with PR4 or higher.

After running a few tests, Yahoo appears to me to be providing a list of all the back links it knows about; at least it reports up to ten times more links than Google and other search engines and even appears to report more links than using the @ search in Google.

That is genearlly true but not totally. Google often omits showing links from pages with > PR 4. I emailed Google on this issue some time back and their reply was that "link: only ever shows a sample of links point to a page".
Mel, I have found on many occasions that any given SE will show me say, 600 links pinting to me, and then some time later this drops/rises dramatically.
If you go here:
http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm
They now have a new "Trend/History Report" that shows this. Can be quite depressing or inspiring!

Well yes sort of, but even then it will seldom show all the PR4 or higher links.
IMO Googles objective is to keep information on just who and how many links there are to a site very vague.

CRAZY
I think its ridiculous that SEs feel they can manipulate any type of results. How would knowing ALL backlinks help SEOs spam SEs any more than they already do? What are SEs hiding by only showing a sampling of backlinks? I just really want to know who all is linking to me, whats wrong with knowing that? If they have the data in their index, why not show it? I think this concept of hiding some of these results is unethical frankly. SEs are supposed to be unfettered databases we can search however we like. They are being stingy by not letting us use their search modifiers fully.

I use marketleap also. Great great tool as it allows you to check backlinks on your site and three competitors. But I use it to check four of my sites at once! Saves me time that way.

kokopoko, do you see dramatic changes in the number of links pointing to a site when using the "Trend/History Report"?
