how do you promote a new niche directory?

Ok, so weve taken our website about dogs and added a dog business directoy to it - Dog Business Directory : Dogs : TheSniffa.com - Question is, whats the best place(s) to promote it? for some reason I seem to have drawn a blank, I would normally post on social networks and find directories of directories to add this too, but where else should i be looking to attract peoples attention?

Why not promote in Pets section!
There are many sites that exclusively deal with pets and animal husbandry.

Well added it to a few pet forums, and Ill do a hunt around for blogs too. I just found this an odd one for promotion as its a directory, although i guess in some senses no different to promoting any other site

Your targeted keywords most likely would be "pet directory," "dog directory" etc. Most website owners are more interested with PR when it comes to web directories, so acquire backlinks as much as you can to improve your PR, I think that is the first step.

The "free" promotion is finding dogs/animals/etc. related websites and contact the webmasters for a link exchange. Sort of what you are doing already...

The "paid" promotion can be ye old PPC campaign. But I guess you might want to consider that after you move to paid submissions.

Offline marketing can also help, but that's more costly (brochures, animal magazines, etc.)

You should go for pet directory, pet forums, pet blogs, etc that relating to your site. It will definitely be good for you to setup a Pet Blog as you can do social bookmarking, linking, etc. Blog is always the fastest way to get links from search engines. Remember to provide quality content to get rank.

Well, you can do on page optimization first for your site before you promote it... once you get your keywords to rank well in Google, surely, that will bring in good and targeted traffic...
