Paid links can seriously harm the SEO of a site, I'm sure you will find that most are looking for real traffic when paying for links, paid links should also have a nofollow tag applied to them.

I find it really useless how many directories include statements like "manually edited", or "only quality sites accepted", quality is usually relative, making it totally unjustified and unfair that some sites get accepted, while other sites gets left out simply because they had less information, content, or was designed in a way the editor didn't like.
